Give Your Instagram Husband A Break

It's about time I did a post about my self-portrait shots. It’s probably one of the most common topics over on my Instagram DM’s so it makes sense to talk about it in more depth! I went live on Instagram in Ibiza and was overwhelmed by your questions and support.

I’m guessing you’re reading this because:

1. Your Instagram husband is awaiting/hinting his redundancy
2. You’re ready to work on your terms and time
3. You’re curious how I take my own style shots
4. You're ready to gain confidence learning a new skill

So a bit of background as to why I decided to go out alone and learn this new skill. The majority of my friends are bloggers. I moved to Sydney on my tod, not knowing one person. I reached out to different creatives to make new friends. We ended up catching up for coffee and helping out each other with photography. This was a great way to meet people, and I still love doing this with a lot of my close friends. I still work full time besides Style Structure meaning weekends are the only time to capture content. The majority of my creative friends took their blog full time at around 45’000 followers, and most of them like to shoot Monday-Friday which is completely understandable. - weekends are precious and the time to spend with loved ones.

Besides fellow bloggers, I had an ex boyfriend that helped me out on weekends - but that became awkward and ended up going downhill pretty quickly, especially when he abused my appearance/weight at times. It made me feel very unconfident in front of the camera and my low self -esteem started to show in my face.

I turned to my good friend Jiawa Liu (or you may know her as @beigerenegade). Her answer was simple.... “Photograph yourself”. At first I was shocked she thought I was capable of this. Why would she suggest this when I have no experience? Jiawa had been taking her own images for years, and she is amazing at it. She told me the tripod to buy (I use the K&F Concept 62) which is extendable.

So with my new equipment in hand, I ventured to North Sydney to shoot my first self-portrait blog post  September 2016. Don’t get me wrong, there were a few things I needed to learn.
  • Firstly, I was using an 85mm lens, which wasn’t too smart to start with as it meant the tripod was really far away from me. Since then, I invested in a 35mm which means I can be a lot closer.
  • Secondly, once I pressed go on the remote I kept making the mistake to move. Once the remote is pressed, it’s better to stay in a similar spot as the camera has already focused on you.
  • Thirdly, I made the mistake taking test shots of my location and kept the spot focusing on my backdrop. This meant that once I jumped into the frame I wasn’t in focus. Instead, the background was.
(Third Form Dress: similar here)

With practice, patience and time I started to correct my mistakes and slowly started to test myself in busier environments. This year was my biggest test - Midtown New York City at lunch hour. You can see the post here.

Yes, people stared.

Yes 2 girls Snapchat me to probably upload to their story “what the F is this chick doing".

And yes some people asked if I’d like help taking the picture like I was a tourist.

No I wasn’t a tourist. I was working! The more you practice the less you notice others around you. What are the chances they will see you again? Maybe you will strike up conversations and educate passers by of what you are doing. Maybe it will become more of the norm and people won’t as intrigued?

Before I regained my confidence, there wasn't one image on my feed without sunglasses. I would hide behind them thinking people didn't notice. Well guess what, Jiawa noticed and the start of this year we started 'the face challenge'. Basically less sunnies, more confident shots looking down the lens.

If it wasn’t for taking my own images, I wouldn’t have learned my good and bad side. The beauty of taking your own pictures is you can take as long as you need. You can capture hundreds of images and not feel bad about it! It also gives you so much freedom when you travel. All images in this post I took whilst in Spain last month. It also opens the doors for more collaborations and travel. If a brand wanted to fly me somewhere I can go alone and feel 100% confident I can capture my own content.

The most important benefit from being a self-portrait blogger (70% of the time) is positive health. After being in an abusive relationship, doing something for me to build my confidence was the best way to heal. I learned to self-love again, recognised my self-worth and have built my brand around taking on the majority of my jobs myself. If it wasn’t for Jiawa and my close friends, I probably wouldn’t be where I am now. They believed in me, and that’s what I needed.

So if you’re tossing up whether to take the plunge and become independent I say absolutely! You can still catch up with your favourite bloggers, Insta husbands and photographers creating awesome work. It just means you don’t have to depend on them for every post.

I hope you have enjoyed reading this article. It’s very different to what I usually write but as it’s a topic you guys are interested in I thought it was time to talk about it more. Receiving messages on Instagram of creatives also taking the plunge and sending me their work has to be the biggest compliment. It’s empowering and uplifting hearing that it’s encouraged you guys to do the same.

Please keep sharing your self-portrait posts with #stylestructureselfportrait. It’s your first step on your journey to being an independent confident man/woman.

Slips and Statements

Season to season, the black slip dress has remained a versatile piece within my closet, and I’m sure yours too. Details change - whether it be the neckline, the straps or the length. Overall, it remains a strong option worn alone or styled layered. I actually love the update on todays Third Form dress. The tie details on the spaghetti straps add something a little more than just a simple LBD. Styling can be mixed up depending on the occasion, worn high on the neckline to look more polished or a little more loose for those easy braless beach days.

Now onto the slogan tee - I.JUST.CAN’T.GET.ENOUGH. My collection is rapidly growing and a little less serious than some of my wardrobe staples. I am finally introducing this seasons biggest colour red somewhere other than my make up bag. The pop of colour on the tee pairs back nicely with a strong lip. I've opted for a statement earrings because let's be honest... there's some amazing pairs around right now. My jewellery box is begging for more space. Something about this ensemble takes me back in time - and I’ve come to the decision it’s the sunnies, clogs and red lip that contribute to this!

New Year, New Neutrals

It’s hard to believe that Christmas was only six weeks ago, exploring Rottnest Island in Perth and enjoying the WA weather. Where has the start of 2017 gone? Now we are into February, I have realised that January was a bit of a wash out and most definitely a rocky one. It’s been a tough few weeks, and decided to take some time off the start of the year to focus my energy into personal relationships. Sometimes with Style Structure and my full-time job I get overwhelmed and miss important things going on in my personal life. It’s important to have balance, and if things get too much it’s okay to prioritise and throw the towel in where need be. New found time meant I could focus on the important things which made me realise that my life shouldn't revolve around numbers, and how fast I am growing over on Instagram. So many times I put undue pressure to achieve more and more, but in doing this you forgo enjoying the process of creating inspiring work. Sometimes quality time with the ones you love has to win, and it's only having time away from my website I realise the importance of that. Burning the candles at both ends is not a good strategy.

Personal matters aside, January was one of the hottest months I have ever experienced in Sydney which made shooting city looks difficult. One of my fellow creative friends is currently residing in Paris. I must admit, her winter outfits are making me a little jealous. It’s strange, because this year I am embracing summer. But deep down winter is my fashion season.  This weekend, it cooled down a touch for me to wear a lightweight knit. That’s the beauty of thunderstorms!

If you follow me over on Instagram, you will know how much I am channeling warm earthy tones this season. It’s also a nice change to my usual monochrome looks, and looks great with a golden glow. Last week I headed to Los Angeles for work and was hoping to photograph this look. Time just slipped away, so took to the streets of Sydney for a sundown shoot on a quiet Sunday night.

A-Line skirts are always the most flattering for my shape, with the high waist doing wonders for me. Cropped knits work well, and I was drawn to the ribbing and multi beige tones on this top. I will probably wear this with a long white shirt underneath for the colder months. That’s the beauty of transeasonal pieces - They can be styled differently for the opposite season and means you can keep your wardrobe to a minimum if styles can be carried through season to season.

Hope you all had a great start to the year, and looking forward to seeing you more over here in the coming weeks. Have a great week!

Denim Done Differently

Over the past few months, I’ve been introducing denim into more than just my weekend wardrobe.  Monday-Friday, I probably wear my mom jeans to work 2-3 times a week. Luckily, working in a fashion head office means it’s pretty relaxed when it comes down to style. It’s nice to have a job where I don’t have to buy ‘workwear’ pieces. An uncluttered closet is something I am actually quite proud of, and would advice any of you to do the same if you work in a chilled environment. It’s the worst feeling waking up and not knowing what to wear in the mornings and when it’s still dark at 6am, the last thing you want to do is rummage through piles of clothes, throwing together a mismatched look with questionable textures.

Although todays look is far away from work, it’s most definitely transferrable into my weekday grind. Whilst holidaying in Italy last month, it wasn’t as hot as we anticipated. The mornings were cool. Culottes were a great choice for the hours of walking we had planned for the day, and adding a sleeveless layer was a good option to take me through to a warmer afternoon. This season, silk slips and camisoles have been an addition to my staples and is the perfect piece to take you all into spring. For winter in Sydney, a tee underneath is the layer you’re going to need. Then come spring, it’s going to be perfect to wear alone just like todays look.

Flat shoes are a must for Rome. Totally digging the snake look to these and the low square heel is perfect to avoid getting stuck between the cobbled streets. Because hey, there were constant missions to find the best Nutella croissants so would prefer little obstacles as possible!

3 Cities, 3 looks, 3 Seasons

Finally back from a few weeks of travel and fun with my other half over in Europe. It had been 18 months since returning back to the UK, and has made me realise I really miss being close to friends and family on that side of the world. I really wish I could just ‘pop’ home that bit more. Are any of you guys an expat and feel me? Life is too short, so a Christmas trip is already on the cards back in Cardiff. Possibly a cheeky week in Berlin too but will keep you posted on that!

Over the space of 2 weeks, we visited Rome, Barcelona, London, and my besties wedding in Spoleto. Having grown up in the UK, I knew packing for high summer would be a fail, but on the other hand it meant over packing for mixed seasons. Extra luggage fees and hauling bags unnecessarily is such a pain and will have to figure logistics better next time. Thankfully, the overweight luggage was needed as temperatures were all over the place city to city.

The metallic crisp look in Rome felt feminine romantic, and it’s fair to say the mornings felt more spring like than I had anticipated. Light layers and classic Gucci loafers for walking around the maze of perfectly formed cobbled streets. FYI, the flowers in Rome are so cheap, so couldn’t help treat myself to a bunch or two! For any of you heading to Italy this year, make the most of the Piazza’s, whether it’s for just a coffee break or to appreciate the architecture surrounding you.

Over in Barca, the temperature heated up. Urban vibes and beach lifestyle actually tempted us to pack our bags and move there permanently. The shopping and dining are on point, which meant a city chic look which could be styled more casually for the beach included bare shoulders and stripes. The look was finished off with my favourite Chloe bag and round sunnies.

In London, the rain and humidity were expected, which meant breathable fabrics were a must. Although it felt very sticky, it looked more like an autumn's day with the grey clouds and constant rainfall. This crochet detailed top was perfect for a British summer. Accessory for this look – umbrella. Standard!

I would love to hear your thoughts on my 3 city looks. More importantly, if anyone has tips or have read some great packing posts recently I would love to hear more in the comments section below. Packing for multiple seasons is so tough, I need guidance for future trips!
